Ned Rorem Concertino da Camera

Dazzling, Sensual. Penetrating… Not all modern performers on the harpsichord can employ the instrument’s powerful range of expressive techniques. Jory Vinikour, however, wowed audiences with spectacular displays of virtuosity and subtle dramatic expression…’ -Bachtrack, 2011.

One of the outstanding harpsichordists of his generation, Jory Vinikour joins the Chi Phil Chamber Players for a harpsichord extravaganza, including the Chicago premiere of a Ned Rorem composition. Vinikour, whose career has taken him to festivals, concert halls and opera houses across the world, brings his ‘effortless virtuosity and artistic intensity…’ (Leipziger Allmanach) to Hyde Park’s beautiful KAM Isaiah Israel.

Featured in the concert is Rorem’s Concertino da Camera for harpsichord and seven instruments, written in 1946 when the composer was only 23. The work was long thought lost however, until it resurfaced and had its world premiere in 1993 at the University of Minnesota.

Also included in the program is Handel’s suite, including the famous fourth movement Air and Five Variations, or known by the popular name ‘The Harmonious Blacksmith’; Bach’s famous 2-manual harpsichord concerto; and works from Chicago composer William Ferris and Chilean-American Juan Orrego Salas.

Jory Vinikour and the Chi Phil Chamber Players guarantee this program of harpsichord chamber music will challenge and excite the audience.
