On Sunday, July 23rd, Chicago Philharmonic will be a part of Ravinia’s Breaking Barriers workshop:

Ravinia’s Inaugural Breaking Barriers Festival celebrates women composers—classical and jazz artists as well as singer-songwriters—who are featured throughout the season. Surrounding the three evening concerts this weekend are panel roundtables, a composer workshop, and more events presented in collaboration with New Music USA and The Chicago Network.

At Sunday’s workshop, witness three Chicago-area composers—selected from a New Music USA call for scores—collaborate with six Taki Alsop Conducting Fellows to bring new works to life. Under the guidance of Marin Alsop, Augusta Read Thomas, and Clarice Assad with the Chicago Philharmonic, this workshop will highlight the many perspectives that contribute to an orchestral premiere.
Specifically, this experience will highlight how two different conductors bring their own nuance to the same piece, as well as what it is like to compose a piece and how conductors manage limited time with an orchestra to learn a new piece. Performances by the Chicago Philharmonic of the awardees’ pieces will be recorded live.
